House Legislators Hold Debate on COVID School Closure

The leaders all agreed that the pandemic-related school closures were handled incorrectly.

House legislators spent this week arguing over the cause of COVID-19 school closures and how best to prevent a similar situation in the future. Members of the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic debated extensively during the day-long hearing, titled “The Consequences of School Closures: Intended and Unintended.” All sides expressed their dismay at how pandemic-related school closures were handled and committed to finding a solution.

“We must strive to be prepared to never let this happen again. Our children have paid the price and are continuing to pay the price,” Chairman Brad Wenstrup said during the hearing.

To help find a solution, Wenstrup told the subcommittee that he had sent out letters of inquiry to the CDC to see how school closures were handled internally. Journalists attending the hearing also encouraged the subcommittee to compare U.S. pandemic strategies to strategies of other countries. Though the comparisons might not be exact, they will doubtless be helpful in informing future policies.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the House subcommittee members as they press forward to find a solution.
  • That the bipartisan group uncovers crucial evidence as they piece together past policies.
  • For Congress in their work to craft a better future from their past mistakes.
